The Royal Standard can be used as a sign of loyalty to the Crown and is a powerful symbol of unity and belonging. The Royal Standard is used to demonstrate the Monarch’s power and authority and to express pride in the kingdom’s achievements. It has become a symbol of national pride, embodying the country’s heritage and values, with the current design featuring four crosses of St George – each one representing a different nation in the United Kingdom.

History of the Flag

The Royal Standard symbolises the Sovereign and the United Kingdom.

It is customary to display the Royal Standard whenever the Monarch is in residence at one of the Royal Palaces, whenever The King is in the Monarch’s official automobile, and whenever The King is in the Monarch’s official aircraft (when on the ground). During a visit by The Monarch, it may also be hoisted over any structure, whether it be official or private (though not over ecclesiastical buildings), at the request of the property’s owner or proprietor. Exceptions include establishments used for religious purposes.

Since 1603 when the Crowns were united, the Royal Standard’s design has evolved through several iterations. The current Standard features four quarterings, with the first and fourth depicting three lions passant, the second a lion rampant, and the third an Irish harp. It was only in the inclusion of the quarterings for Scotland and Ireland into the Royal Arms that Wales was given representation in the Royal Standard, even though the formation of the Prince of Wales had recognised its unique status as a principality.

The Royal Standard is hoisted only when the Sovereign is present. If the Union Jack is flying above Buckingham Palace instead of the Standard, the Sovereign is not in residence.
