HISTORY OF THE SOMERSET FLAG

In 1911 Somerset County Council was awarded its coat of arms by the College of Heralds. Today this coat of arms is featured on the flag of Somerset. The flag features a bold red dragon that is upright with claws outstretched on a gold background. In 2013, the Somerset County Gazette, along with a local law firm, Pardoes, organised a county-wide competition to choose a county flag for Somerset. The competition was won by a man named Ed Woods who submitted the traditional emblem of Somerset.

The symbol of a dragon has been used by Celtic culture for thousands of years and was adopted by Somerset County Council as a nod to the myth that King Arthur had a red dragon. Others believe it was inspired by the banners borne by Alfred the Great and his kin during the era of the Viking Wars, which were described as bearing red or gold dragons.

USAGE OF THE SOMERSET FLAG

There are many depictions of dragons throughout the county of Somerset including the county library, churches, and even outside County Hall headquarters in Taunton. Several years after the county flag was registered, the Somerset cricket team adopted the design in part of their uniforms.
